Maybe you’re not failing.
Maybe your environment has not been supporting the change you’re trying to make.

In this episode of What’s Beneath the Weight, Noel Ellis breaks down how your environment shapes your habits, your mindset, your routines, and the patterns you keep repeating.

Sometimes the issue is not that you don’t want better.
Sometimes your life is still feeding the version of you that you’ve outgrown.

This episode explores how the people around you, the content you consume, your home, your routines, your stress, and even what feels “normal” can quietly reinforce old cycles.

You’ll learn:

  •  Why motivation and willpower are not always enough
  •  How your environment makes certain habits easier to repeat
  •  Why old relationships, routines, and spaces can pull you backward
  •  How shame can cause you to disconnect from supportive environments
  •  Three questions to help you assess what your life is reinforcing
  •  How to create support without needing a perfect life

This is another layer inside The Beneath Method, helping you understand what may be influencing your results beneath the surface.

Because lasting change is not just about trying harder.
Sometimes it’s about creating a life that supports the change you say you want.

Maybe it's not that you're failing. Maybe your environment hasn't been supporting the changes that you're trying to make. And I know that might sound strange, but sometimes repeating the same cycle has nothing to do with you just not wanting it bad enough. Sometimes it's because your life is still set up in a way that makes the old patterns that are contributing to where you currently are in life easier to repeat. And that can be things like your daily habits and routines, certain relationships you're entertaining, things in and around your home, and even the content that you're consuming. All of that matters. Your environment can influence your behavior more than motivation and willpower. And don't get me wrong, motivation and willpower still matters, but they are not always enough when your environment keeps pulling you back into the same cycle. Your environment shapes what you do, what you do becomes what you repeat, and what you repeat starts shaping the trajectory of your life. So if you've ever felt like you were doing your best to move forward, but the surroundings kept pulling you back into the same cycle, then today's episode is for you. Welcome back. I'm Noelle Ellis, the muscle mindset specialist, and this is What's Beneath the Weight, where we go beyond the scale to uncover the mindset, muscle, and meaning behind lasting change. Because real transformation doesn't happen on the surface. It happens when you understand what's beneath it. Now, in the last episode, we talked about beliefs. We talked about the stories you start believing about yourself after repeated pain, setbacks, and disappointment. And the takeaway for that episode was simply this beliefs are not always facts. A lot of times they are interpretations. But now we have to ask ourselves another question. What makes those beliefs so easy to fall back into? And what makes the old pattern so easy to repeat? A lot of times it's the environment around you. Because even when your mindset is starting to shift, your environment might still be reinforcing that same old cycle. And that is exactly what we're going to talk about today. Your environment. This is one layer inside the Beneath method. And today we're looking at it from an awareness standpoint, not the whole process, but just a place to begin noticing what your life might be reinforcing. Now, when we talk about environment, we're not just talking about your home or the food in your kitchen. We are talking about everything around you that keeps shaping how you think, how you feel, and how you move throughout your day. So things like your routines, the relationships you have, the social media content that you're consuming, things that become habits because they make your life easier, and things that you avoid because they make your life harder. And this is what we tend to ignore. You can truly want change, but still be living in an environment that makes the old pattern easier to repeat. A lot of our habits are driven by what we constantly see, what we easily have access to, what fits naturally into our routine, and the things that capture our attention. And sometimes the hardest part of change is when you're trying to build a new life inside of an environment that still supports the old one. So even when part of you wants to grow, what surrounds you can keep pulling you back towards what feels familiar. And that's why this layer matters. Because sometimes it's not just the habit you're trying to change. Sometimes it's the environment that keeps making the habit easier to return to. And I want to share with you what this looked like in my own life. Before I started my weight loss journey, my environment matched where I was at the time. I was around people who thought like I did, who lived like I did, who acted like I did. And we were all comfortable staying just the way we were. Health and fitness was not a priority. Growth was not really the focus. And honestly, my surroundings reflected that. But once I decided to take my health seriously, and I started changing what I allowed around me, I began distancing myself from that old circle of influence. And I started spending more time around people who were serious about growth, people who were into fitness and discipline, people who wanted to build something better for themselves. And slowly my environment started matching the life that I was trying to build. But when I experienced a few setbacks and the weight started to creep back on, shame came along with that. And unfortunately, with that shame, it caused me to pull away from the healthier environment that I had built for myself because I felt like I didn't deserve to be around those positive people anymore. And without even realizing it, I started drifting back towards my old surroundings, my old circles of friends, old habits and thought processes. And eventually my physical space started to reflect that too. I stopped making the gym a priority. I started filling my home with foods that did not support my goals. It was my mental space too. I started consuming content that had nothing to do with the future that I said I wanted. Things that I was watching, what I was listening to, what I was letting enter into my mind, all of it started pulling me back towards the version of me that I was desperately trying to escape. And looking back on it now, I can see it clearly. When my environment matched the life that I was trying to build, it helped me move forward. But when my environment started matching the life that I was trying to lead behind, it made it easier to stay stuck in that old cycle. And this was a part that I had to recognize. It wasn't just about me needing more discipline. It was also about looking at what I kept allowing around me. Sometimes changing your habits isn't enough. Sometimes you have to look at who and what you keep around you. And as you're listening to this, this might be a perfect opportunity to take an honest assessment of your own environment. Not the one you wish you had, but the one that you're actually living in right now. Maybe you've been blaming yourself for falling off track when part of the issue is what you keep returning to. Maybe the question isn't why can't I get it together? Maybe the question is what around me keeps making it harder to move forward. Or what things are in my environment that keep pulling me back to the same cycles. Sometimes the problem is not that you don't want better. Sometimes your life is still feeding the version of you that you've outgrown. And this is where many people get stuck, including myself. Instead of looking at what's influencing the pattern, we turn it into another reason to blame ourselves. So let's look at this from a place of awareness. And I don't want you to think of this as just another list of things that you need to fix overnight. That's not what this is. This is about awareness. Before you can change a pattern, you have to understand what keeps making that pattern easy to return to. So today, I want you to notice three things. First, what does your life make easier? Does your day support the choices you say you want to make? Or does it keep pulling you towards the choices you were trying to move away from? And I want to be clear, this is not about judging yourself. It's about noticing the patterns in your life. Sometimes the habit is not random. Sometimes your routine, your stress, your surroundings, even the people around you have been making certain habits easier for you to repeat. Second, notice what feels normal around you. Sometimes the things that feel normal have a quiet way of shaping what you accept in life. If stress feels normal, if putting yourself last feels normal, if being around people who don't support your growth feels normal, then it becomes easier to stay in that pattern without realizing how much it's affecting you. And finally, notice where you may need more support. Not a perfect environment, not the perfect life, just more support. Maybe that support looks like a calmer morning. Maybe it looks like a more protected evening. Maybe it looks like being more mindful about who you're allowing to speak into your life. Maybe it looks like making the right choice easier to reach for. It doesn't have to be anything huge or overwhelming, just one place where your environment could start working with you instead of against you. So maybe this week, instead of axing, why can't I get it together? Ask yourself what around me keeps making the old pattern easier. Again, this is not to shame yourself and it's not to judge yourself. I just want you to notice because once you see what has been influencing the cycle, you can begin to choose differently. This is why environment matters so much when we talk about lasting change. Because even when you're doing the inner work, your outer world is still shaping what gets repeated. If your environment keeps feeding old patterns, progress will flow harder than it needs to. Now, that of course doesn't mean that you can't change, but it does mean that there's more to pay attention to. So if there's one thing I want you to take from today's episode, it's this. Because in the next episode, we're talking about action. But not action rooted in panic, guilt, or pressure. Action that actually aligns with the version of you that you're trying to become. Because once you understand what you've been carrying, how your body's been protecting you, what you've been believing, and what your environment has been reinforcing, the next question becomes what does aligned action actually look like? And that's what we're unpacking next. If today's episode resonated with you, it's because transformation is never just physical. It's mental, it's emotional, it's what's happening beneath the surface. And that's exactly what we break down here on what's beneath the weight. So if you're ready to stop starting over and start understanding what's really driving your results, make sure you subscribe so you don't miss what's next. And until next time, remember weight is not the problem, it's the signal.
